Visceral Games’ upcoming Dead Space 3 has come under a bit of scrutiny recently for a few things. Most significantly is fan concern over it looking a bit too much like a standard shooter, but personally I’ve made peace with the fact that it long stopped being a survival horror at the second game. Then, last week’s reveal that the game will use micro-transactions as part of its weapon crafting system also caused a bit of a stir, as fans aren’t happy with the idea of these transactions affecting gameplay.
Now, this past weekend during an interview with CVG, the game’s producer John Calhoun may have possibly given the skeptics more ammunition by suggesting that using micro-transactions is part of a strategy to attract the 'smartphone generation' to the game, as it’s about “expanding” the audience.
"We need to make sure we're expanding our audience," he said.
"There are action game fans, and survival horror game fans, who are 19 and 20, and they've only played games on their smartphones, and micro-transactions are to them a standard part of gaming. It's a different generation. So if we're going to bring those people into our world, let's speak their language, but let's not alienate our fans at the same time."
The more cynical or skeptic among gamers would suggest that EA is alienating the core Dead Space fan base by mass marketing the game in these ways.
But regardless of all that is said and done before its release, we can only judge the game after we actually play it so I’ll be giving Dead Space 3 a run through as soon as it’s out.
