Microsoft Pushes On With Indie Goodness, Announcing A Partnership With Unity
Jun 28th 2013, 06:00

Well, isn’t Microsoft just having one hell of a good week so far? Yesterday the software giant announced that it was scrapping fees that developers were forced to pay for every patch they released for their game, a system which made indie developers cringe. Now, Microsoft has announced an exclusive partnership with indie-friendly game engine and developer toolkit company, Unity Technologies.

Unity is massive in the indie industry, providing thousands of developers with a powerful and extremely versatile toolset to create some rather spectacular titles. The “strategic partnership” will also offer free Unity-developed tools for Xbox One to any creator working with Microsoft Studios, making the offer extremely enticing.

Unity’s David Helgason spoke about the partnership with Microsoft and the Xbox One, and what this means for indie developers.

“We want to provide the best engine in the world. And an important dimension to that is opening up as many avenues as possible for our developer community to find success.”

Although access to these Unity tools will require developers to publish through Microsoft Studios, it’s still a rather exciting announcement. Microsoft seems to be listening to feedback from everywhere, first removing DRM restrictions and now changing their stance in terms of indie development on the Xbox One.

Again, continue Microsoft. Please continue.
