Wesley's team discovers the reason for the unstable cataclysms (it's owing to Dilithium thingies) and although they'd have to be compelled to violate the Prime Directive to avoid wasting the earth, Data's defense of Sarjenka and her individuals convinces Picard agrees that the Prime Directive most likely is not that vital and he commits to serving to the child out. (Hey, it is not like it is the Prime Directive, right? Oh, it is? Well, there is some flexibility in each law.)
