Watch Dogs is looking to be one hell of an open-world game and certainly one that redefines what it means to interact with the world around you. It seems almost logical that any new kid on the block in the business of sprawling sandbox games should contend with the old guard which in this case would be GTA V. technically that’s the new guard but we’ll stick with the cliches for now. Actually, comparing games just because they’re open-world is like comparing a mongoose with a cygnet just because both creatures have eyes.
Ubisoft exceutive director for EMEA territories Alain Coore claimed last week that Watch Dogs would hail in a new genre for the company namely ”open-style GTA genre.”
“Yes, Grand Theft Auto is one of the biggest brands in the industry and everybody respects the brand and we’ll have fun playing the next one too,” he said. “But I think Watch Dogs’ positioning is also on next-gen, bringing a lot of features – connectivity, interactivity, companion gaming and so on which is bringing some freshness to the genre.”
Coore believes that the popularity of the GTA series can only help Watch Dogs succeed. “The spirit will be that this kind of game is great fun and I think Watch Dogs can also bring a lot of the same fans.”
Competition is always good but is Watch Dogs really there to be compared with GTA V? To me they seem like rather different takes on the open-world experience.
